About the Disability Grant

The Disability Grant is a monthly payment made by the South African government to people who are unable to work due to a physical or mental disability. The grant aims to provide financial support to persons with disabilities who would otherwise struggle to meet their basic needs.

Current Grant Amount

R2,190 per month

Amount valid from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026

Types of Disability Grants

Permanent Disability Grant

For people with a disability that will continue for more than 12 months. This grant is awarded for a maximum of 5 years, after which a new medical assessment is required.

Temporary Disability Grant

For people with a disability that will continue for a period of 6-12 months. This grant is awarded for a period of 6-12 months, depending on the medical assessment.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the Disability Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • Be between 18 and 59 years of age
  • Submit a medical assessment report (less than 3 months old) confirming your disability
  • Pass the means test (your income and assets must be below a certain threshold)
  • Not be maintained or cared for in a state institution
  • Not be receiving another social grant for yourself

To qualify for the Disability Grant, your income and assets must be below certain thresholds:

Required Documents

Identity Document

Your South African ID, smart ID card, or valid refugee permit

Medical Assessment Report

A medical report from a doctor confirming your disability (less than 3 months old)

Proof of Residence

Utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit confirming your address

Proof of Income

Pay slips, bank statements, or affidavit if no income

Proof of Assets

Bank statements, property valuations, investment statements

Marriage Certificate

If married, divorce decree if divorced, or death certificate if widowed

Bank Details

Recent bank statement or letter from the bank confirming your account

Proof of Unemployment

UIF card or affidavit confirming unemployment status

How to Apply

    Visit your nearest SASSA office with all required documents

    Complete the application form with the assistance of a SASSA official

    Undergo a medical assessment if you haven't already done so

    Provide your banking details or choose a payment method
  5. 5
    You will receive a receipt as proof of application

    Your application will be processed, which may take up to 3 months

SASSA pays Disability Grants on specific days each month. Payment dates are determined by the last three digits of your SASSA grant number or ID number.

Protecting Your SASSA Card
