About the Child Support Grant

The Child Support Grant (CSG) is a monthly payment made to the primary caregiver of a child to help with the costs of raising the child. It is one of the most important social assistance programs in South Africa, reaching millions of children.

Amount valid from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026

Who Can Apply?

The Child Support Grant is available to the primary caregiver of a child who meets the following criteria:

  • The primary caregiver must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
  • The child must be under 18 years of age
  • The caregiver and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test
  • The child cannot be cared for in a state institution
  • The caregiver must be the primary person responsible for the child's daily needs

Means Test Requirements

To qualify for the Child Support Grant, your income must be below certain thresholds:

SASSA pays Child Support Grants on specific days each month. Payment dates are determined by the last three digits of your SASSA grant number or ID number.

Important Payment Information

  • If the payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, payment will be made on the next business day

Can I apply for the Child Support Grant if I'm not the biological parent?

Yes, any primary caregiver (grandparent, aunt, uncle, foster parent, etc.) can apply as long as they are the main person responsible for the child's daily care needs.

How long does it take to process a Child Support Grant application?

Applications typically take up to 3 months to process. If approved, you will receive payment from the date of application, including any backdated amounts.

Can I receive the Child Support Grant if my child is in school?

Yes, children attending school are eligible for the grant. In fact, school attendance is encouraged for all grant beneficiaries.

What happens when my child turns 18?

The Child Support Grant automatically stops when the child turns 18. The last payment will be made in the month of the child's 18th birthday.

Can I apply for multiple children?

Yes, you can apply for each child in your care who meets the eligibility criteria. Each child will receive the full grant amount.

What if my income changes after I start receiving the grant?

You must inform SASSA of any significant changes in your income. SASSA conducts regular reviews to ensure continued eligibility.
